SEP 1994 – JUL 1997 – Database Operator

This role came about with the introduction of the Schools Information Management System (SIMS) pre-SIMS.net days; which at the time was utilising the Novel Netware Network Operating System.

The position was to be the primary source of data inputting that other users would read from.

This allowed me and the school to have a standardised format and consistency of data input; Which is something I continue to strive to push in all my positions since.

September 1994 – July 1997

Role

  • Collect and input into the school’s Schools Information Management System (SIMS), Pupil information, attendance, exam results and timetable. (Pre-SIMS.net).
  • Provide support of SIMS to staff.
  • Maintain an asset list, record and monitor equipment as it goes out for repair.
  • Occasional cover of the school’s telephone switchboard.
  • Order & Stock vending machines.
  • Keyholder to lock and unlock the school site during early or late shifts.

During my time at the school, I was able to utilise my programming skills by creating a stock control program of consumables, such as printer cartridges and paper, but later increased it to include the site’s vending machines contents which I took on.

I also created a bolt-on a program that allowed me to track the incoming and outgoing of items requiring repair, recording dates, room locations, fault and repair history; Eventually, the program was extended again by including room-specific details for the caretaker such as room dimensions, window sizes, light fitting types and tube sizes.
